Lock on Modern Air Combat Flaming Cliffs 2 Flight Simulator Review for PC

History lesson incoming. Lock on: Modern Air Combat was released way way back in November 2003, and it set the new standard for Flight Simulators. Graphically amazing for the day, if you had a powerful PC, it recreated in amazing detail the Black Sea region, and focused on air to air and air to ground combat and allowed the use of 8 flyable aircraft.

Roll on a few years and Eagle Dynamics released an unofficial add-on called Flaming Cliffs which corrected many small and niggling faults with the original game, and added the Su-25T as a flyable plane.

In 2010, Eagle Dynamics released Flaming Cliffs 2. This took all that was great about the original game and brought it bang up to date with the Black Shark graphics engine, and it's here that we shall pick up the story.

To play Flaming Cliffs 2 you MUST have Lock on: Modern Air Combat installed!!

Available Planes

Right off the bat we are treated to a great selection of toys to hoon around the skies in.

  • A10A
  • F15C
  • MiG 29
  • Su-25
  • Su-25T
  • Su-27
  • Su-33

What a line up! Who doesn't love to fly the A-10, rough, tough low and slow, this thing is a flying tank with the fire power to back it up.

The F15C needs no introduction, THE top scoring air superiority fighter in the world, with beyond visual range fire and forget capability.

MiG 29, one of the most manoeuvrable aircraft in the world, capable of air to air and air to ground missions.

Su-25 and its upgraded replacement the Su-25T are Russia's premier ground attack aircraft. The fire-power they carry dwarfs even the A-10.

Su-27 and Su-33 are both extremely capable high altitude interceptors and super manoeuvrable dog-fighters, and they carry a huge payload of missiles. The Su-33 is the fleet defence carrier born variant of the Flanker.

Gameplay

So, what do we get apart from the planes?

How about a campaign editor? Check

How about a mission editor? Check

How about campaigns and single missions? Check

Long shot, how about online play, and making said online play compatible with Black Shark, the simulator of the Russian attack helicopter? Check and check again! This game gives you a lot. There is so much to do even if you don't want to fly online.

The graphics are scalable so most systems should be able to handle it. And if you are intimidated by the level of detail don't be, there are video tutorials that you can download for free and install into the game for an integrated training experience. Believe me, if I can understand the systems used in this game, then the average player will have no problem!

I absolutely LOVE this sim, and it represents great value for money, 10 out of 10, go by it already!!
