Best Free Software and Anti Virus

By

Free Software. Sounds good doesn't it, but how do you know whats good and what isn't? Can free anti-virus solution really by any good, and how can I clean a Windows 7 PC and keep it running smoothly. What about that cool video I saw on Youtube, wouldn't it be great if there was some sort of "Youtube Downloader?" If you have asked yourself any of these questions, do yourself a big favor and read on, all shall be revealed.

If you grab yourself a selection from the following 5 items of software, not only are you going to be well protected from Viruses and spyware, but you can do it easily and best of all, for free!

Please note: There are no links in this article due to Hubpage's rules and regulations on this type of Hub. Google is your best friend (and no, I am not even linking to Google either)!

5 Youtube Downloader

Simple to install, lightweight, addware free, this wonderful little free piece of software will download any Youtube or similar videos directly to you hard drive. Simply find what you want, copy the URL into the space provided in the software and hit the download button. It really is that simple! The picture quality is as good as watching it on the original website, and all definition options are catered for.

4 PhotoScape 3.5

This item of free software is a feature rich photo editing suite. Think Photoshop but less flash and hundreds of dollars cheaper (being free and all that)! It can also handle RAW files, as well as the more common Jpeg and Gif files, so you really don't need anything more as an amateur than what's on offer here.

3 VLC Media Player

VLC has been around for a long long time, and is my trusted free media player. It will handle just about any type of video and audio formats, from dual audio track films and DVDs to OGG, MP2, MP3, MP4, DivX, HD codecs like AES3, Raw Dirac, and even has support for playing back zipped files.

2 Advanced SystemCare Free

This really is something of a one stop shop for tuning your PC, be it Windows XP, Vista or Win 7. It cleans junk files, tunes up your system, clears out the registry, defrags hard drives, protects against known malware and even helps you with privacy issues, all within an easy to use graphical interface.

A word of warning, it is an extremely powerful and versatile piece of free software, but when it asks you if you want a backup, say yes, and be careful making changes if you don't fully understand them!

That aside, I love it and use it weekly.

It has just been updated, and is even more versatile and easy to use, brilliant stuff !!

AVG Antivirus Free Edition

Fast and easy install, doesn't take up much in the way of resources, this is a great little package. There are still a few issues with false positives (where it thinks it has found a virus but hasn't) but overall 2011's new version is miles ahead of last years version. And of course it's still free, which is awesome when you think of who much some anti-virus solutions cost.

It even has a widget for windows 7 and Vista users.

Conclusions

There is an absolute abundance of free software available these days.  Of course not all of it is great, but if you pick and choose carefully, you can save so much money without affecting your security and productivity.  So surf away, and look out for those bargains, because it does seem possible that at this moment in time there is such a thing as a "free lunch."

I agree, I love the AVG virus thing and the VLC media player too. Great choices.

VLC is the daddy of all media players, I installed the Divx player and have not been able to use my CD/DVD drive ever since, its a driver conflict, I put a CD in and my pc crashes... only thing I can do to fix it is a clean install of windows.

Nice hub, maybe include DVD authoring software as that is one of the most popular software searches.

Oh by the way, this hub may be flagged because you have 5 links to the same domain, hubpages does not like any more than 2 links to the same domain per hub, you may need to find alternate sources. It happened to me once.

Thank you both for reading, and thanks for the heads up on linking, I should have realised! It should be no problem to find some alternative download sources and change them over a bit later. Good advice on the DVD software too. Thanks again, Zak

Thank you Zakmoonbeam! These are some wonderful references forfree software. Hey, I have been in search for a free "keywords for Google AdWords" type software. If you know of any that would be great!

This article is one that can always be updated, a great asset! Thank you for the Hub!!!!!

Zak, CNET is the shit for great downloads that are spy-ware/add on free. Most loads force a pound of dingle berries with them. I'm gonna send you a note on a cheat for future reference. I voted you up all over the place.

Here is a link for making cds off youtube, http://www.flv2mp3.com/ I've not got past eye balling it but with the copy police all over LimeWire I hate sneaking in doing a couple minute downloads and then bailing out so I'm always searching for free ways to get tunes for free.

I picked up an image program called "Paint.net" that is cool and free, I'll have to walk backwards but I'm thinking it was from cnet, and "Eusing Free Registry Cleaner" I'm sure was cnet.

I'll be checking these out. I an in the last days of my antivirus so I'll be looking there as well.

wow, people still use limewire? get a torrent client and peerblock to stop yourself getting fined or worse. peerblock is free and does its job nicely, stopping nosey copyright holders trying to get you into trouble with the local authority's

Oh I like your list of free software. I would like to add Pidgin to the mix as well. Great for chatting with friends from pretty much all networks available out there, and of course Google Chrome and its many extensions.

Zakmoonbeam 15 months ago

Jobister, thanks for reading, am currently investigating Pidgin on your advice, and of course, I am sat here writing all my Hubs on google Chrome, can't live without it thesedays!!
